you'll never see this coming

The Gospel in 'Argyle'

July 01, 20252 min read

Dear reader,

“The greater the lie, the greater the spy.”

That line is one that stuck out to me as I watched a film recently.

Argyle is a spy movie, in which a writer is being hunted due to her spy books predicting the future.

(Not a bad concept right?)

Well, the film was all over the place, not inherently a bad film or a good one. There were a few parts here and there that were very funny, but overall it fell flat except for one Marjory theme.

Twists.

The film had so many twists, surprises, hidden characters, and agendas. It was like the air the characters breathed in the movie. What would the next twist be?

That stood out to me. I immediately thought of my own life, and how the trials and tribulations I’ve walked through have been rather heavy at times.

Losing good friends and relationships.

Getting kicked off of a missionary trip.

An untimely appendix surgery.

Divorce that ripped apart my family.

The list can go on and on. Some of them are twists that I never see coming, some are consequences of my actions, good or bad.

The most recent twist would be this business venture. The amount of faith and trust I’ve had to place in God over the past 2 months has increased with each passing day.

Some days go great, and it feels like I’m making progress, then there are other days where it seems like each step I make is another kick in the face.

But reader I ask you this, isn’t this what our life is made up of?

What good would a story be if it didn’t have conflict and twists?

It’d be so boring. When I grow old and gray I want to recount to my grandchildren my adventures, my downfalls, and God’s faithfulness.

That will always be the distinguishing factor. God’s faithfulness is unchanging, even when my life is a constant roller coaster.

Sincerely,

Your Fellow Not-a-Spy
