How to Have Faith Like a Child

July 08, 20252 min read

Dear reader,

When was the last time you read a children’s story?

I’ve neglected reading stories lately. Unintentionally of course, but that was something I wanted to change

Last night I finished a book called “On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness”. It was incredibly hard to put it down.

I have talked with My Dear Friend and Brother-in-law about stories for as long as I’ve known him. Narnia and Middle Earth have been discussed on many occasions, but he introduced me to another world.

Aerwier.

The Musical Artist Andrew Peterson Began writing the Wingfeather Saga in 2008. It currently has 4 books that lay out the storyline. But may I just say it is a beauty to enjoy a story that paints God’s character and our response to it?

There are 3 main characters.

Janner: The eldest son who is constantly angry for one reason or another.

Tink: The middle son who is always thinking about his stomach and the next way he could get into trouble.

Leeli: The youngest girl who amidst her physical ailment, is determined to be as kind and helpful to anyone around her, even her enemies.

The story is full of surprises and mysteries that slowly unfold. But again, the Character of God is present. He goes by the name “The Maker.” And even though The Maker doesn’t speak with the characters, or even get much page time, by the end of the story it’s apparent how much the Characters needed The Maker.

I needed to read this. I needed to feel the characters' anger towards God and each other. To see the moral failures and the redemption and forgiveness, to see the evil in the world that is unchanging, yet watch the hand of God protect and hold the lost and the hurting.

The preferred age reading this story is 8-12. If children are truly reading this story and allowing the Holy Spirit to spread the seeds of truth in the world I want to be a part of that mission.

To make disciples and share the truth of scripture whether or not the world fully acknowledges it.

I don’t need to make the next Harry Potter or Twilight series. But if God wants me to tell a story that reflects who he is without it being a cheesy Christian narrative then that is what I will do.

I’ve begun the process. I’m a long way away. But I will say with the God of the Universe living within Me, I’m sure the story He wants to tell will be told. I’m in a constant state of surrender as I write it.

If I’m not, it’s my story and not His.

Sincerely,

Your Fellow Kid Story Reader
