Embracing Slavery
Dear reader,
I don’t know about you but the term slavery has never been one I would long to bring up in conversation.
But in the past week or so I’ve been trying to view myself as a slave, and I must admit it has helped clear up my thinking so much.
Let me explain.
A slave means to be owned by someone. I know you probably already knew that, but I’m sure your view of slavery is as twisted as mine was.
We think of specific races being demoralized, we think of unfair conditions and brutal scenarios when people’s rights were stripped from them.
We think of Moses and the Israelites.
We think of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
We think of The Help and maybe some gross pie.
But let’s view this from God’s perspective.
He created us.
He has every right to be our Lord and Master.
He has tasks for us to do.
He provides our needs when we need them.
He provides shelter when needed.
No one on earth could match the level of love and intentionality that Our God has toward us.
If a slave means someone who is given a role, a home, food, and protection that doesn’t sound wrong at all. Yet that is not how we have come to know slavery.
A slave’s situation is determined by His Master.
My circumstances are determined by My Lord.
I have to admit I’ve come to the humbling conclusion that I do not get to sway God’s decision-making in my life. I don’t have the right.
He is Perfect.
I am far from it.
Any input that I can give God He already has weighed the option before I open my mouth.
He doesn’t need me to speak my piece. He lets me sure, but that doesn’t mean at the end of the day anything changes.
What God says goes.
Where God leads is the final say.
Why God chooses to do as He does, doesn’t need to be defended to the likes of us.
My constant fighting against my Master brings me nothing but further pain to myself. I will never know better than he does, and I have a hard time surrendering to someone perfect, in doing so I must admit I’m not perfect.
Yet my Master knows this and doesn’t flaunt it before me, he welcomes me into his embrace, he reminds me of the price that was paid on my behalf, and he shows me his goodness and His ways.
In the end, it’s always worth it to be a slave.
Today I implore you, to acknowledge God as your Lord and Master.
See what He does on your behalf, and lay down your pride so that you can serve and worship Him more sincerely.
Sincerely,
Your Fellow Slave to Righteousness
