Dear God (Happy Father's Day)
Dear Father,
It’s Father’s Day, and I’ve written a letter to my earthly Father, but now I would like to write one to you.
I can’t seem to let you stand on the sidelines as I once did. Like a cool toy, I would only play with it every now and then as a kid. I have come to understand You’re intimately in every avenue of my life and story.
As You should be.
Everything comes back to you. Even when I don’t think it does, in your power and grace you slowly show me how You’re always at the center of it all. And who else would it be? Me? I already have imagined my life with me at the center and it always ends with disaster, so I aim to keep you on the throne of my life, and please utterly obliterate anything and everything that tries to take that place from you.
No one can compare to you.
No one can come close to matching your power.
No one is remotely like you.
Father, sometimes it feels so funny to even call you that. You gave me a fantastic Dad, and I’ve learned so much from him. But it wasn’t until 2020 that you showed me your father-like characteristics.
Your discipline.
Your love.
Your grace.
Your humor.
Your wisdom.
Everything that I look at in my earthly father that I inspire to be are all characteristics you’ve blessed him with.
Thank you for choosing him to be my Dad. You didn’t make a poor choice. He’s a wild one, but he knows what’s important and he will listen to you when you need to bring back onto the narrow path.
You blessed our whole family when you put him in charge. We’ve had many adventures and times of laughter due to how you wired his brain and led his will.
I don’t thank you enough for giving him to me. Thank you so much Father for giving me such an amazing example of what it means to follow you with complete surrender.
He does it. He does it gleefully.
One thing I do ask, is I want to intercede on his behalf. Lead me to make a more precise practice and discipline of this. I never really prayed for him as a kid. Maybe in high school when I saw how important prayer is. But now, more than ever I see the necessity of praying for the ones we love and treasure.
Father, please hold my Dad.
Hold his family, God, there are a lot of kids that you gave him. And speaking for all of us we all need all the help we can get.
Speak the truth to him so loudly that the enemy and his forces can’t use lies against him.
Increase his joy and love for you and your word.
Give him strength as you constantly give him opportunities to be weak. He is fully dependent on you, he has to be, please hold him and guide him with all wisdom Father.
Grow his heart for those around him. The ones that are easy to love and the ones who aren’t. Increase his sympathy and empathy to view each person as someone You love dearly.
Increase his humility and kill his pride. Let him not stumble and fall morally, and if he does let him be quick to run to your presence in repentance.
Father you gave me a very gracefully broken man as a Dad.
He has many strengths and many weaknesses. Please continue to have your hand on his mind, body, and will. Guide and guard each part of him as he walks in this life. Heal all the hurt of this world that has affected him, perform surgery, and actively kill the sin and the flesh that plagues his mind all day long.
He needs you Father, and I know you delight to be near to him.
You’ve given him the time to rest and teach this upcoming week. Pour your spirit out on him, and let all that hear the words that come out of his mouth be blessed, encouraged, and challenged.
Let him be still and sit with you.
Give him rest Father. That man never seems to have enough, unless he’s abiding in you, which he seems to do quite often.
Speak to him, loud and clear, let him hear how you truly see him.
Encourage him, lift his heart up.
He loves to worship you. I’ve seen it. He’ll put a whole gospel choir to shame with how quietly they sing in comparison.
You’ve pulled him away from everything for a week.
Thank you for doing that for him. You know how much he needs it.
Hold him, Father, hold him close.
Protect him from the enemy, loose anything evil that is bound to him in any way, and free him from anything that is holding him back from a deeper intimacy with You. Deliver him from the enemy and his tactics.
Thank you Father for loving me so well, and thank you in advance for how you will continue to bless my dad all the days of this life. He’s very excited for Heaven he speaks of it often, so when you’re done with him down here he’s ready to go and worship you in eternity.
A lot of people will miss him, but I know He’d rather be there with you.
In the name of Jesus, and the power of His blood that was spilled for us I pray all these things,
Amen.
Sincerely A Wannabe Father,
-Mitchell
